Apple is said to be planning a massive counter to the new “Ultrabook” phenomena by releasing a $799 MacBook Air model in the Q3 of 2012, slashing the original price of the laptop by $200.
The claim originates from DigiTimes, which cited sources within Apple. Apple’s intends to target competing PC makers “Ultrabooks” that are expected to be priced around the $699 mark. If competitors fail to price it in this range Apple may steal a march over everyone with this move.
At current Apple’s cheapest option is the 11.6” MacBook Air, which costs $999. Apple also offered a slightly more basic version of its 13” for educational institutions at $999.
Apple is also set to overhaul its entire Mac lineup in general in the coming few weeks. It is strongly rumored that the makeover is to begin with the new MacBook Pros. Before the advent of this recent report, little has been revealed about the new MacBook Air lineup and any proposed changes.
So if you’re planning on investing in a new MacBook Air, I’d wait a couple months before pulling the trigger on that.
